Injury Prevention Physical

WHAT IS IT?

The Injury Prevention PhysicalSM is Movement PT's exclusive evidence-based Musculoskeleatal Examination specifically designed to REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY AND IMPROVE ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE.  We can test and score how well your body physically moves.  How your body moves is vital for normal functioning and tied to your overall health.  THE ABILITY TO MOVE WELL OFTEN MEANS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EXPERIENCING PAIN AND NOT.  Good movement means with ability to participate in the activities you want to do and work or get through you day without limitation.  Recent medical research has found that POOR MOVEMENT PATTERNS, POOR BALANCE AND ASYMMETRIES REDUCE THE EFECTS OF TRAINING, DISTORT BODY AWARENESS AND ULTIMATELY INFLUENCE MOVEMENT EFFICIENCY - THUS HEIGHTENING YOUR RISK OF INJURY AND REDUCING ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE.

Movement's Injury Prevention PhysicalSM utilizes a combination of specialized tests including the Functional Movement Screen (FMS).  Put simply, the FMS is a proven ranking and grading system that generates a score which is used to target problems and track progress.  The scoring system is directly linked to the most beneficial corrective treatments to restore mechanically sound movement patterns and reduce the risk of injury.

Scott was the first therapist in the Valley certified to use the FMS.  He is the sole practitoner advanced trained in the system.  The FMS is currently being used in all major professional sports, college sports, the US Military, and various public service sectors (Police, Fire, etc.).

We recommend annual Injury Prevention PhysicalsSM.  This allows us to catch dysfunction before it becomes a bigger issue.   The best way to prevent musculoskeletal injury is to regularly monitor and restore balance and movement patterns.  It is especially important to get rechecked with an Injury Prevention PhysicalSM when transitioning between sports, seasons or when starting a new fitness routine.  Your continued health and success is a priority at Movement Physical Therapy.

WHY DO I MOVE POORLY NOW?

The lack of activity in one’s life can definitely cause erosion in fundamental movement patterns, but other things can be equally damaging. Some examples are: poor postural habits, poor work ergonomics, poor quality and quantity of sleep, limited recovery between workouts and exercises, unbalanced workout and exercise practices and loads, poor coaching/training/instruction, poor nutritional habits and food quality, workouts and exercises that do not introduce a variety of movement patterns, programming lacking a balance of perspective of quality and quantity, exercise volume that compounds poor form and fosters compensation, a misunderstanding of movement competency compared to physical capacity, exercise program design without movement baselines and retesting for effectiveness, injury followed by incomplete rehabilitation and cover-up medicine, etc.… Read more on this topic here.

WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT?

Functional movement is defined as movement based on real-world situational biomechanics. Almost inevitably, musculoskeletal injury and pain are associated with dysfunctional movement. The Functional Movement Systems are comprised of two components that help tell us more about how our lives are influenced by movement. The two components are the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA). Dr. Scott Wacker is the only clinician in the Vail Valley certified and trained in both systems. The Functional Movement Systems are currently being utilized in all major professional sports and the US Military.
